Description
Point Wilson Lighthouse is located in Fort Worden State Park at the far northeast corner of the Olympic Peninsula.
On the evening of December 15,1879 the light keeper lit the towers oil lamp for the first time. A fourth-order Fresnel lens focused light, visible from any point along a sweeping 270 degrees of horizon. Soon a fog signal was placed in an adjacent building. A twelve-inch steam whistle, it was powered by a wood-burning boiler.
By 1904 high tides had eroded much of the beach in front of the lighthouse and soon threatened the tower itself. To save the lighthouse 1,500 tons of rock and rubble were piled up to the east and west of the tower, but even stone could not hold back the sea forever. A new lighthouse was commissioned and was ready for service by 1914. Constructed of reinforced concrete the forty-six-foot octagonal tower was designed to reduce wind pressure on the building.
