Crater Lake is the most irridecent color I have ever seen, and visible from 20,000 feet in the sky as you fly over if traveling by plane. That was the vantage point I had the first time I saw this lake and knew I had to go there.
Crater Lake was formed after the collapse of the ancient volcano of Mount Mazama erupted nearly 7,700 years ago. It is believed to be 42 times as powerful as the eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state, in 1980. The basin of caldera was formed after the top 5,000 feet of the volcano collapsed. Subsequent lava flows sealed the bottom, allowing the caldera to fill with approximately 4.6 trillion gallons of water from rainfall and snow melt, to create the seventh deepest
