Description
Traveling down the Oregon coast in my pursuit of every lighthouse along the way and near the famous Tillimook Cheese Factory, I toured the Cape Meares Light. A very small, but powerful light overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean.
Cape Meares light was completed in 1890, in what is now the Cape Meares State Park Oregon. The original octagonal iron tower was 38 feet tall and looked like a squat cheesboard rook. It stood on a towering cliff 217 feet above the breakers and made it one of the highest navigational aids in America. A huge Henry Lapaute first-order lens, illuminated by a coal-oil lamp, made the light visible from 21 miles out to sea. After 75 years of service, the Cape Meares Lighthouse was retired in 1963. A new structure has been built and houses an 800,000-candlepower light, which can be seen for 25 miles out to sea. The original lighthouse is now open to visitors.
