Description
This view of Phantom Ship is from the Sun Notch area as you travel around the route that encompasses Crater Lake.
Crater Lake was formed after the collapse of the ancient volcano of Mount Mazama erupted nearly 7,700 years ago. It is believed to be 42 times as powerful as the eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state, in 1980. The basin of caldera was formed after the top 5,000 feet of the volcano collapsed. Subsequent lava flows sealed the bottom, allowing the caldera to fill with approximately 4.6 trillion gallons of water from rainfall and snow melt, to create the seventh deepest lake in the world.
Words cannot describe the blue color of this lake....I think the only word that comes close is "iridescent". The result of the collapse of Mount Mazama formed the most beautiful lake you will see which is 6 miles wide nestled in this 8,000 foot caldera. During the summer months you can navigate the 33 mile rim drive around the lake, enjoy boat tours, or hike countless trails in the park. The winter brings some of the heaviest snowfall in the country, averaging 533 inches per year. Views of the lake can be enjoyed during fair weather days during the winter and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing is also possible.

Spectacular Sharon! Love the blue water and reflection. I can actually see a little bit of the ripples in the water. Looks so calm and peaceful. Added to my favorites and tweeted. L/T/Fave.
