Description
At the north enterance of Yellowstone Park is the Albright Visitor Center and Mammoth Terraces Hotsprings. On this occasion, a snow storm was moving in, one of many that passed during the course of that day.
Hot Springs are similar to geysers, but they have no constrictions in their plumbing. Superheated water cools and circulates as it reaches the surface and is replaced by hotter water from below. This circulation, called convection, prevents water from reaching the temperature needed to set off the chain reaction leading to an eruption. In areas underlaid with volcanic rock, as opposed to more easily dissolved limestone, a modification of the plumbing system; perhaps through small earthaquakes, can easily turn a hot spring into a geyser. The many beautiful colors you see in hot springs are caused by light refraction, suspended mineral particles, and heat-loving microorganisms.

This belongs on 'Lord of the Rings', it looks like one of the creatures on the film, great shot.

Beautiful scenic capture, and I truly love the spire of rock as it has many accents of texture and beauty. Used to live in Tacoma, and my wife and I attended the Spokane World's Fair, and it was as beautiful as I remember it as a youngster. Thanks for the beauty share, Sharon! fave and vote
