Description
Grotto Geyser is in the Old Faithful Basin area, and as you follow the paved path, will pass by Giant Geyser,Castle Geyser,Beehive Geyser just to name a few. I am in awe of these Geysers and the power and heat that is just under foot. The caldera that encoumpasses this entire park is one of the largest in the world. Grotto Geyser erupts about every 7-8 hours, and eruptions can last for 1 hour on a short interval eruption to as much as 26 hours, depending on the previous eruptions. It splashes to a height of 30-40 feet (3m) at the start of the eruption. The Grotto Geyser is a fountain-type geyser, and the pool through which it erupts is hidden inside the Grottos unique sinter formation. The formation of this Geyser is the result of sinter coating old tree stumps that once grew around the geysers pool. The result is a shell like formation that is not seen anywhere else in the park. Grottos sinter formation connects directly to the large raised rim of Rocket Geyser, Both Geysers erupt simultaneously.
A must to see in the winter to fully appreciate just how many steam vents are in this park. From the West Side of the park you can go in by snowcat vehicles and as you travel along the road steam is riseing from countless vents. Something you would not notice so much in the Summer or even in the Spring as the surface temperature rises.

That's amazing that there's so much snow when under the ground is steaming. Nice capture Sharon. v

The formation of this Geyser is created by minerals which have built up over old tree stumps which used to grow there until the geyser started erupting. I updated the description to tell more about it. Thank you for the visit and vote. SE
